CQ DX MARATHON ---> The CQ DX Marathon is a year-long DX hunt, with participants competing to see who can work the greatest number of countries ("entities") and CQ zones during the calendar year. Complete results of the 2024 edition are on https://dxmarathon.com/results/2024/.
PZ5IP ---> After an initial setback due to tidal conditions, operations from Papegaaien Island commenced at around 19.30 UTC on 1 April, "with PY8WW handling a massive pile-up on 21 MHz SSB, Rico [PZ5JW] operating on 18 MHz SSB, and Klaus [DL8TG] running FT8 on 28 MHz. However, at 10 PM, a powerful storm hit us with strong winds and heavy waves. We had to scramble to protect our equipment and laptops, while also securing our tents from being blown away. For safety reasons, we decided to pause operations. The night continued with relentless rain and strong winds. By the morning of April 2nd, the rain had eased, and the sun appeared, allowing us to rebuild our station. The day proceeded with good weather and favorable openings toward Europe and North America.
During the greyline period, we logged many stations from Asia and the South Pacific. However, our relief was short-lived. The weather suddenly deteriorated again, bringing strong winds, torrential rain, and high waves due to the coinciding high tide. Another dreadful night followed as we struggled against the harsh conditions.
On the morning of April 3rd, we woke up to heavy rain. Given the forecast predicting two more days of severe weather, our team convened and decided to end the expedition for our safety. We logged a total of 2,000 QSOs - a lower number than we had hoped for, considering that many IOTA chasers needed SA-092. However, we left knowing we had done our best. The expedition provided us with valuable experience for future operations. Unfortunately, the weather forecast had deceived us, initially predicting good conditions
throughout our stay. The rapid and unexpected weather changes proved to be our greatest challenge". [Source: https://paradxgroup.wordpress.com]
SV1GA DXCC PROCESS ---> "We apologize for the long delay of the accreditation process of our recent SV1GA/A Mt. Athos operation. Unfortunately, this process will still encounter some further delays but we would like to state the following.
It should be noted that it has been more than 35 years since an outside group was able to transmit from Mt. Athos. The paperwork we presented is in a way unique and as such ARRL is probably looking into it diligently to ensure compliance.
Quite recently, Monk Iakovos, SV2RSG was suffering similar pains, during
the ARRL process of getting his activation approved for DXCC. Although with a long delay, ultimately everything was settled. SV1GA is now in a similar process.
To speed up the process, the SV1GA team has approached a former and seasoned ARRL DXCC expert and approached legal advice to help the A RRL DXCC Desk build a complete picture of this somewhat challenging situation. It is known to us that the ARRL accreditation represents climbing a larger mountain than the mountain itself, for a DXpedition to a rare location, such as Mt. Athos.
The late Roger Wester, G3SXW used to say that 'the country is rare for a
reason'! We think that his saying fits well with the Mt. Athos situation today.
With kindest regards,
Adrian Ciuperca, KO8SCA and Martti Laine, OH2BH"
SWODXA DX DINNER ---> The 40th DX Dinner, sponsored again by the SouthWest Ohio DX Association (SWODXA) and held in conjunction with the 2025 Dayton Hamvention, will be on Friday, 16 May at the Marriott at the University of Dayton. Hal Turley, W8HC, a veteran of many DXpeditions, will be the keynote speaker. The "DXpedition of the Year" and the inductees into the CQ DX Hall of Fame will be announced during the event: see https://swodxaevents.org for the tickets and the list of DX Dinner prizes. + SILENT KEY + Vladimir V. Shishko, 4K9W (ex UD6DKW) passed away on 3 April.
"Being an invalid, after the loss of his mother, Vlad needs to arrange a continued care by his own to keep having a more or less normal life and to enjoy our great hobby on air", Axel, DL6KVA wrote back in late 2008. He organised a fundraising campaign (https://4k9w.blogspot.com) that involved the amateur radio community around the world to provide Vlad with a 24/7
caregiver.
